Why Feeling Safe to Sell Changes Everything — And What Neuroscience Says About It

Let’s rewind to 2012…
I was sitting in my silver Ford Escape, parked outside a tech company, spiraling. My heart was racing. My hands were shaking. I couldn’t think straight—and I was supposed to walk into a sales call in five minutes.
I remember thinking, “What is WRONG with me?”
Now I know the answer: nothing was wrong. My nervous system simply didn’t feel safe.
The Science: Your Brain Thinks Sales = Danger
UCLA neuroscientist Matthew Lieberman discovered that social rejection activates the same part of the brain as physical pain. That’s right—your brain literally processes “no” as if you’ve been physically hurt.
So it makes perfect sense that when you go to ask for the sale, your body says: NOPE. Danger ahead. Abort mission.
But here’s the good news: your brain is overreacting. It’s treating a simple business conversation like a saber-tooth tiger. And that means we can gently rewire that response.
3 Lies Your Brain Tells You During Sales Calls
- “I’m being pushy and annoying.”
This comes from the spotlight effect—we assume everyone is judging us when in reality, people appreciate clarity. Offering someone a solution is being helpful, not pushy.
- “They’ll definitely say no.”
Research from Stanford shows we consistently underestimate people’s willingness to say yes. You’re not bothering them—you might be exactly what they’ve been looking for.
- “This will ruin our relationship.”
In reality, successful sales often strengthen relationships. You provide value. They get results. That’s not manipulation—that’s service.
