The Overwhelm Is Real (But You’re Not Behind)
If you’re a new coach trying to grow your business, chances are you’ve heard a dozen different “must-do” strategies already:
Build your website.
Start a funnel.
Create a freebie.
Post every day on Instagram.
Be on LinkedIn. And TikTok. And maybe launch a podcast too.
It’s no wonder you’re overwhelmed—and no wonder you’re still stuck.
The truth is, there’s one big mistake I see nearly every new coach make that creates more stress than sales. And once you understand it, everything can start to shift.
I Tried to Do Everything (And Nearly Burned Out)
When I started my coaching business, I listened to all the experts.
They told me to be “everywhere.”
So I was.
Facebook. Instagram. TikTok. LinkedIn.
I bounced from platform to platform while sipping peppermint tea and trying to calm my nervous system. I watched Reels about editing Reels. I tried to figure out video tech that made me feel ancient. More than once, I had to ask my teenage daughter for help.
And still… no clients.
What I did have?
A pounding headache.
A bruised ego.
And a deep sense of shame that I wasn’t getting it right.
But then something shifted.
I was on a coaching call helping a client figure out where their leads were coming from. I pulled out a lead generation spreadsheet—and it hit me:
Where were my leads coming from?
Spoiler alert: Not Instagram. Not TikTok. Not my “About” page.
They were coming from:
-
Referrals from past clients
-
Partnerships with people in my local community
-
Speaking opportunities and connection calls
In other words, clarity and connection—not content and comparison—were fueling my business.
Confusing Busywork with Strategy
Here’s the #1 mistake I see new coaches make:
Trying to do everything—before they’re clear on what actually matters.
Instead of focusing on getting clients, they focus on looking like they have a business.
And that leads to:
-
Building websites without offers
-
Designing freebies with no list
-
Rewriting their About page 10 times
-
Picking brand colors like it’s a personality test
All of this feels productive…
But it’s usually a way to avoid the real work of showing up, being seen, and making offers.
What New Coaches Think They Need (But Don’t)
Let’s bust some myths.
Most new coaches think they need:
-
A perfect website (with every page beautifully branded and SEO-optimized)
-
A full marketing funnel (even if they don’t have a list or an offer)
-
A logo, brand shoot, and business cards
-
A massive social media following
-
A course, group program, or fancy freebie
But none of that gets you clients if you don’t first have clarity on who you serve and what you offer.
What You Actually Need to Grow Your Coaching Business
Here’s what does get clients in the early stages:
✅ Clarity on your niche (who you help + the transformation you offer)
✅ A simple, well-priced 1:1 offer
✅ Marketing foundations that fit your personality
✅ Sales confidence
✅ A supportive community to help you focus and stay out of the spin
One of the best tools we use in Launchpad is the 90-Day Sprint.
Instead of doing “all the things,” you pick 4 meaningful goals per year and commit to consistent, focused action.
Simple. Grounded. Sustainable.
Why 1:1 Coaching Is the Smartest First Step
Here’s the most aligned place to start: a 1:1 coaching offer.
You don’t need tech.
You don’t need a huge audience.
You don’t even need a website.
When I began, I used Acuity to schedule calls and Google Docs to share notes. I met clients at coffee shops or on Zoom.
That’s it.
No launch plan. No funnel. No burnout.
1:1 coaching is fast to deliver, powerful to refine, and deeply connecting. It helps you get real feedback from real clients—and gives you the confidence to grow from there.
How to Shift Out of Overwhelm: A Simple Reframe
If you’re spinning in strategy overload, here’s one of my favorite NLP-inspired reframes:
“If what I’ve been doing hasn’t brought the results I want…
what might become possible if I chose a simpler, more aligned way?”
Let that land in your body.
Now take one aligned breath.
Exhale the pressure.
And let’s find a calmer way forward.
Journal Prompt for Clarity and Alignment
🖊️ Take out your journal and write on this:
“What have I been doing because I think I should?
What would feel more grounded and true?”
Let yourself tell the truth. No filters. No pressure. Just clarity.
You’re Not the Problem—Your Strategy Might Be
You’re not behind.
You’re not broken.
And you’re not bad at business.
You’ve just been following advice that wasn’t made for the stage you’re in.
You don’t need more content.
You need more clarity.
And you deserve a coaching business that supports you emotionally, energetically, and financially.
